Drum Charts and Songs

Over the years I have notated out a large number of drum charts for songs.  Some were done out of personal interest, some were done to help students, and some were done to help me prepare for performances I had to do.  I have decided to share some of these charts in the hope they are useful to someone else.  They are available for free and I expect nothing in return for access to them.

However, please keep in mind that these are unofficial charts and I have no personal / official connection with the songs, artists or recording companies that produced them. They are simply a learning, study, analysis tool for helping to develop a better understanding of drum set performance.

If requested by the original artist or official copyright holders to remove them I am happy to do so.
So I cannot guarantee that this page will remain active and the charts on it will remain available.

How are these charts written out? The Process:
All of these charts have been written out by me. I simply listen to the song and try to figure out what the drummer is playing, and I write that down by using the music notation software Sebelius.

Writting out drum charts can be difficult and time consuming as it is often hard to hear what the drummer is playing on the track when all the other instruments and vocals all happening at once. Especially if there is a lot of production and effects used.
In a case where I can't figure out what is happening, I watch live performances and film clips to see if I can see what was happening. Live mixes usually sound very different and you can often hear things that are hidden on studio recordings. If that fails, I simply write out that part based on another version, such as a live performance. If that doesn't work, I have to guess whats happening and or write something that I feel would work.

Typically, I base charts on the official single version. This is because these are the easiest versions to find on YouTube or a similar video / music channel.

If you compare these charts to live performances or other arrangements of the song you will most likely hear differences. This is because it is common for drummers to change aspects of what is played in a song, especially when playing live. They may add extra notes here and there, change the drum fills or play on the ride cymbal instead of the hihat. And in some cases, there may be over dubs of drums or cymbals on the studio recorded version that can't be played by one person live. So some open mindedness needs to be used when using these charts.
It also needs to be mentioned that other drummers and percussionists may notate the same song differently and debate the correct methods and music theory elements.

I hope that these charts are useful. I will add more as I get time to review and upload them.
